ELLEN STEINBERG (Temple Emanu-El)
I have known Cantor Liat Pelman-Forst for approximately twenty two years, first as a performer and choir master at Congregation Bnai Jershrun on Staten Island, Cantor from her ordination to her performance with the Choir as Choir Director at Congregation Temple Emanu-El in Staten Island where she introduced multi-part singing, and now as a warm and caring friend.
Talent, spirituality, sensitivity, and the ability to communicate these traits are not attributes you learn, but something innate. Good cantorial singing comes from the heart. Cantor Liat possesses these qualities: Talent as a performer, her ability to move people with her singing, and to lead novices to become a cohesive and beautiful sounding choir.
I grew up as the granddaughter of a well known cantor. I know what it is to listen to beautiful cantorial music, especially when it comes from the heart. It is a moving experience to listen to Liat sing. Finally, Cantor Liat treats her friends as her family. I consider it a privilege to be able to experience that.
